Fresh herbs and greens on your countertop – all year round

With this smart indoor garden you grow basil, lettuce, parsley, mint, tomato seedlings or microgreens right in your kitchen. Even in the middle of winter and even in a spot without daylight. The system combines hydroponics and ordinary potting soil in one unit, has its own 24 watt full spectrum LED grow light and a self-watering reservoir with water level indicator. Sowing, germinating, growing on and harvesting all happen in the same unit.

Hydroponic growing system and potting soil in one unit

The growing tray has four separate pods. You can fill them with growing medium and nutrient solution for hydroponics, or simply with potting soil. That makes the set far more versatile than a standard hydroponic tray: germinate in water, grow on in soil, or do both at once in different pods. Because each pod stands on its own, you can grow four different crops side by side without the roots getting tangled.

When growing in water, the EC value and the pH level of your nutrient solution determine how well your plants do. A simple EC or pH meter for liquids lets you fine-tune both.

24 watt full spectrum LED with adjustable height

The built-in LED bar delivers a full spectrum with a high PPFD value and therefore replaces sunlight. Plants grow compact and sturdy instead of stretching towards the window. The lamp sits on an adjustable support: set it low for seedlings and raise it to 49 cm as the plants grow, so the light distance is always right.

PPFD is the amount of usable light that actually reaches the leaf. That value drops quickly as soon as the lamp moves further away: at double the distance only about a quarter of the light remains. This is why a light height that grows with your plants matters more than wattage alone. To find out how much light your plants get elsewhere in the house, measure it with a light meter for plants.

Timer and dimmer: care on autopilot

On the control panel you set the timer to 8, 12 or 16 hours of light per day. The cycle then repeats automatically every day, even when you are away. Brightness is adjusted in five steps: low for seedlings, full power for fruiting vegetables. Forgetting to switch the lamp off is no longer possible.

Self-watering, with water level indicator

The water reservoir feeds the plants gradually, so you do not have to water every day. On the side you see at a glance how much water is left; the indicator warns you when a refill is needed. A week away is therefore no problem.

From seed to harvest in five steps

  1. Choose a method per pod. Fill a pod with growing medium and nutrient solution for hydroponics, or with ordinary potting soil. The four pods may well be filled differently.
  2. Sow and fill the reservoir. Place the seeds on the medium or sow them shallowly in the soil, then fill the water reservoir until the indicator reads full.
  3. Set the lamp low and the timer to 16 hours. Seedlings need many hours of light but little intensity: use a low dimming level and keep the LED bar close above the pods.
  4. Raise the lamp as they grow. Keep roughly a hand’s width between the LED bar and the top leaves. Increase the dimming level as the plants get bigger.
  5. Harvest and sow again. With herbs and lettuce, always cut the outer leaves and the plant keeps growing. Microgreens are harvested in one go, after which you sow again.

Who is this indoor garden for?

  • Kitchen and balcony gardeners who want fresh herbs to cut all year round
  • Beginners without green fingers – the system handles light and water itself
  • Anyone starting seeds for the garden who wants sturdy, non-leggy seedlings
  • Apartments, offices and homes with little daylight

Indoor garden, budget model or just the windowsill?

Feature This indoor garden (PCT300) Cheap entry-level model Windowsill
Light output 24 W full spectrum, high PPFD Often 10 to 15 W Variable, structurally too little in winter
Growing method Hydroponics and potting soil Usually water only Potting soil only
Light height Adjustable from 31 to 49 cm Often fixed or barely adjustable Not applicable
Controls Timer 8/12/16 hours and 5 dimming levels Often on and off only Manual
Certification CE, EMC and LVD Not always verifiable with cheap imports Not applicable
Result Grow on all the way to harvest Mainly sprouts and microgreens Fine in summer, leggy plants in winter

Why this indoor garden costs more than an entry-level model

There are cheaper growing kits with four pods. The difference comes down to three points. First, the hybrid system: here you also grow in potting soil, not only in water. That is the difference between raising sprouts and growing a plant all the way to harvest. Second, light intensity: 24 watt full spectrum with high PPFD, while entry-level models often sit around 10 to 15 watt – plants still stretch under those. Third, certification: this set is CE, EMC and LVD tested, which is far from always the case with cheap imports.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need daylight?

No. The full spectrum LED provides the complete light spectrum plants need. The set therefore also works in a room without a window or in a dark corner of the countertop.

What can I grow in it?

Herbs such as basil, parsley, coriander, mint and chives, leafy greens such as lettuce, rocket and spinach, microgreens, and seedlings started for the garden. For tall fruiting crops such as tomatoes the height limits you to the seedling stage.

Do I need to add nutrients?

With hydroponics yes: water alone contains no nutrients. Use a liquid plant food for hydroponics. If you grow in potting soil, the soil usually holds enough nutrients for the first few weeks.

How often do I need to refill?

That depends on the number of plants and their size. The water level indicator shows exactly when the reservoir needs topping up – in practice usually once every one to two weeks.

Does the lamp use much electricity?

No. At 24 W and 16 hours of light per day you end up at roughly 0.4 kWh per day, comparable to a small energy-saving bulb left on all day.

How long before I can harvest?

Microgreens are usually ready after 7 to 14 days. Cut-and-come-again lettuce and rocket can be harvested after about 4 to 6 weeks. Herbs such as basil and parsley take 4 to 8 weeks before you can cut from them regularly. Under a constant 16 hours of light per day this goes faster than on a windowsill in winter.

Can I grow tomatoes or peppers in it?

For the seedling stage yes, and that is exactly where this set excels: you get sturdy, compact seedlings instead of leggy stems. Growing on to fruit is not possible, because the LED bar reaches 49 cm at most. Transplant the seedlings afterwards into a larger pot, greenhouse or vegetable bed.

Does the indoor garden fit under a kitchen wall cabinet?

At its lowest setting the set is 31.2 cm high, at its highest 49.2 cm. Under a standard wall cabinet there is typically 45 to 60 cm of clearance, so it fits in most kitchens. Measure the space above your countertop if you want to be able to raise the lamp all the way.

How do I prevent algae in the water reservoir?

Algae appear wherever light reaches water. Keep the reservoir closed, do not fill above the indicator and replace the water completely every two to three weeks. Rinse the reservoir with lukewarm water when starting a new crop.

Which nutrients should I use for hydroponics?

A liquid hydroponic nutrient, diluted according to the instructions on the bottle. For leafy greens and herbs you usually work with a low to medium concentration. An EC meter for liquids lets you check that the solution is neither too strong nor too weak.

What do PPFD and full spectrum mean?

Full spectrum means the LED emits all the wavelengths plants use, from blue for compact growth to red for flowering and fruit set. PPFD is the amount of that usable light landing on a square metre of leaf per second. Wattage says something about power consumption, PPFD about what the plant actually receives – which is why a lamp you can hang close above the crop is more effective than a powerful lamp at a distance.

What about warranty and returns?

This product is covered by the statutory warranty. You also have 14 days to return your order, provided the set is complete and in good condition.
